Professional fields of interest
My research interest has always been primary production and forest production ecology, i.e. how trees and forests grow in relation to their physiology and to local site conditions as determined by climate and soils. This has gradually expanded to analysis growth and dynamics of forest ecosystems, accounting for environmental influences and large scale disturbances. The latter include air pollution, climatic change, herbivory, etc. For the study of tree and stand growth and development, I have been using systems analysis, simulation modelling and scenario studies as main tools. In recent years, I have become more interested in forest management strategies, and within several projects we are thinking about adaptive forest management strategies in reply to the changing needs of society as well as to the changing environmental conditions for forest growth (e.g. associated with global change). Besides adapative management strategies, I am also interested in the adaptive capacity of trees and forests themselves. An important aspect of the adaptive capacity to changing site conditions are water relations of trees and stands, and this is an area that we will be giving increasing attention in the near future.
